GM has spent many billions on Cruise, the self-driving–car developer it acquired in 2016.

Consider the bill for the past four years: GM reported Cruise’s operating losses totaling $5.8 billion between 2021 and 2023, plus $1.3 billion for the first nine months of this year.

On top of that, it spent $2.1 billion in 2022 to buy out a former Cruise shareholder, SoftBank.
